What does Specialist Family Law Accreditation mean?

4 JUL 2019

Our specialist family law solicitor, Barbara Richardson, has recently been reaccredited by both the Law Society and Resolution, First for Family Law. The Law Society accreditation scheme tests general knowledge of family law. The Resolution accreditation scheme requires assessments in a minimum of two specific specialist areas.

The Law Society was the first to set up a Family Law Accreditation Scheme in 1999.  Barbara was one of the first family lawyers to apply and become accredited, and she has since successfully applied for reaccreditation every 5 years.  The reaccreditation process includes the completion of 4 anonymised case studies of real-life cases. You can identify an accredited member of this scheme by their use of the Law Society’s quality mark which means that their work has been rigorously and independently tested by the Law Society.

Barbara also applied to become a Resolution accredited specialist family lawyer and was first accredited in January 2004 with particular specialisms in Advanced Financial Provision and Children Law (disputes between parents or relatives).  Resolution accredited specialists have to pass a core assignment paper and specialist portfolio papers in their chosen specific areas of family law. The assessment tests their knowledge, abilities and the way that they work with you and other people. The expertise and experience of Resolution accredited specialist family lawyers is assessed to make sure that their work on your behalf achieves a constructive and effective outcome for you and your family’s future.

Barbara has successfully reapplied for accreditation in the areas of Advanced Financial Provision on divorce and Children Law, and since July 2016 has also been accredited in dealing with the area of Pensions on Divorce. She is the only Resolution accredited expert in Pensions on Divorce in Lancashire.
