Lawyers warn of ‘incapacity crisis’ over LPAs– another good reason to take professional advice and make a LPA

10 JUL 2018

A report published recently by Solicitors for the Elderly has warned that around 12 million people in the UK are at high risk of future incapacity but have failed to plan ahead to ensure their wishes are followed by omitting to make a Lasting Power of Attorney. This report is published at a time when there has been a sharp increase in people being diagnosed or at risk of being diagnosed with dementia.

The report published shows that 12.8 million people over the age of 65 run the risk of developing dementia but there are only 928,000 Lasting Powers of Attorney currently registered.

More than one third of people admit to not having made any provision for later life such as writing a Will or creating a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Lakshmi Turner, the chief executive of Solicitors for the Elderly has said that “it’s about having a positive conversation about welfare, empowering your loved ones and making the decision-making process easier for everyone”.
